Moving from California to Georgia: Rules and a 90-Day Checklist

A move from California to Georgia involves more than arranging a truck and choosing a house. The transaction process, registration deadlines and some everyday laws differ. Handling those details early helps keep an otherwise well-planned move from becoming a series of last-minute problems.

Use this timeline as a planning framework, then confirm the requirements that apply to your household and transaction.

About 90 days before moving: establish the financial and work plan

Confirm employment arrangements, relocation benefits and whether your compensation will change. Ask payroll about the approved work location and withholding process. Keep records of the move date and the facts supporting your residency change.

If you will retain California property or receive income connected to California after moving, speak with a tax adviser before deciding that a change of address resolves the issue. California-source income can remain taxable to nonresidents. FTB guidance for people who change residency.

Build a cash plan for movers, storage, travel, deposits, temporary accommodation and a possible overlap between homes. Discuss the financing implications before deciding whether to sell first, buy first or rent temporarily.

About 60 days before moving: understand the purchase process

California buyers may be familiar with an escrow holder coordinating the closing. Georgia's closing process generally requires a Georgia lawyer, subject to the limited pro se exception. Confirm who the closing attorney represents and whether you need separate counsel for individual advice. California escrow overview, State Bar of Georgia advisory guidance.

Do not assume a California purchase contract's procedures carry into Georgia. Review the actual agreement's inspection or due-diligence period, earnest-money requirements, financing and appraisal provisions, notice methods and deadlines with your agent and attorney. Calendar the dates in the signed contract; there is no universal inspection window that applies to every purchase.

Arrange inspections and insurance quotes while there is still time to evaluate the findings. Confirm the closing, possession and moving dates separately. They need not be the same day.

About 30 days before moving: finalize logistics

Get written mover estimates tied to your inventory and required services. Identify whether you are hiring the carrier or a broker. Check the interstate mover's registration and complaint information using the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's resources. Understand delivery windows, storage charges and the protection provided for lost or damaged items. FMCSA moving guidance.

If you are renting, read the Georgia lease rather than assuming the terms match your prior California lease. Review deposits, maintenance responsibilities, notice, renewal and early termination. The Georgia Landlord-Tenant Handbook is a useful starting point for questions to raise with counsel.

Collect identity documents, insurance records, vehicle title or lienholder information and any required school or medical records. Confirm utility start dates and arrange secure handling of closing funds with the closing office using independently verified contact information.

After arrival: put vehicle deadlines on the calendar

Georgia requires a new resident to apply for a Georgia driver's license within 30 days. Vehicle registration is also generally required within 30 days of moving to Georgia. Obtain the Georgia license or ID needed for the registration process and check the county tag office's requirements. Georgia DDS, Georgia DOR new-resident registration.

For qualifying new-resident vehicles, Georgia lists Title Ad Valorem Tax at 3% of fair market value, separate from title and registration fees. A vehicle valued at $40,000 would therefore produce $1,200 of TAVT under that rule, before other charges. That is an illustration, not a quote; confirm your vehicle's eligibility, valuation and treatment with the tag office. The new-resident rule is not the rate for every later vehicle purchase. The same DOR guidance identifies metro counties where applicable emissions inspections are required.

Everyday laws: do not assume California rules follow you

One clear difference concerns cannabis. California permits adult-use purchases for people 21 and older, subject to restrictions. Georgia does not legalize recreational marijuana; its medical program has its own eligibility and product rules. California's regulator also states that cannabis cannot be taken across state lines. California rules, Georgia Medical Cannabis Commission FAQs.

Other rules depend on your situation. Before moving, identify any occupational-license transfer, home-business, rental-property, firearm, estate-planning or healthcare-access questions that matter to you, and obtain current guidance from the appropriate regulator or qualified professional. A general real-estate checklist cannot establish that every permit, arrangement or legal document transfers unchanged.

Finish the home setup

Confirm the property's tax jurisdiction and applicable homestead process. Review association rules and service responsibilities. Document the home's condition at possession, learn where the utility shutoffs are and keep important warranties and inspection records together.

Update your voter registration, mailing address, insurance and financial records through the appropriate official channels. If you rented first, use the initial weeks to test your commute and everyday routine before committing to a purchase.

Can I keep my California license indefinitely after moving? Georgia's new-resident deadline is 30 days. Check DDS requirements for your license type and circumstances.

Is changing my mailing address enough to resolve taxes? No. Residency and income sourcing depend on the facts. Keep records and obtain individual advice.
